This will be a long guide but its also some of the more complex strategy in Boom Beach, and I hope that it helps many of you on your journey in the game.
Statues
Statues are an integral part of Boom beach. Now there are a number of different types of statue set ups used in various stages of the game as well as different play styles. If you look at the top leaderboards you will notice players using a ton of Ice statues. This would lead most people to believe then that Ice are the best and most important statues in the game, this however isn't true... Those players used entirely different setups to get to the top 50, typical setups to get to the leaderboards include a large numbers of PSC (Power Stone Chance) statues (7) and MPS (Master Pieces) of GBE (Gunboat Energy), TD (Troop Damage), and TH (Troop Health). This is to build up power powder for the run up the boards, most people typically need to build up about 5000-6000 PP (power powder) for boosting all their Ice 24/7 for the months necessary to stave off attack and get to the top. People who are in competitive 5,10, and 25 man task forces will all use TD, GBE, and Usually 1 TH MP Statues. These people typically don't care abut holding resource bases or getting attacked and mostly use full offense Smooka or warrors for everything. Then you have the Turtles... you have all seen these players, people 20+ levels above you with ridiculous defense and hardly any VP. Statue setups usually include a GBE MP, TD MP, TH MP, 2 Ice MPS, and 5 Greenies. These folks never attack PVP bases and even only rarely attack mercenary bases, they control ALL resource bases and do events and that's it. Game progression is very slow and most task forces will kick these players out as their intel is quit poor. Now, I want to talk about typical statue setups for the average Joe Boomer, basically the players like you and I who aren't Turtles, or aren't planning a run at the leader boards anytime soon. Everyone should have MP's of GBE, TH, RR (Resource Reward), PSC, and TD, after that it can be little bit of personal preference. Most people will have at least 2 more GBE Guardians, sometimes as many as 5. Having another RR Guardian can really help with big upgrades. IF you are an offensive player above lvl 30, you SHOULD NOT have ANY green statues, green statues are good in the very early levels of the game and after that they are only useful in Turtle strategy. If you are an average Joe Boomer that likes attacking and doing ops and events, you should be using strictly Red and Purple statues with possibly 1 or 2 Ice and that's it. 5 Green statues will not give you the resources of 1 Resource Reward MP statue. Armory Upgrading
Up to HQ 11 (about lvl 25) you should upgrade pretty much everything in the armory. This will give you a feel of how all the different troops play, with the exception of scorchers, grenadiers and support troops like medic and cryoneer which come later. After this point you need to start being a little more picky about your upgrades. You're probably thinking why don't I just upgrade everything in my armory, then upgrade the building and rinse and repeat? The problem with that is you will eventually get to a point where your HQ is 5+ levels above your armory and while everyone else is attacking with maxed troops and gunboat abilities for their lvl, your troops will be 5+ levels behind everyone else's making attacking any base almost impossible. Your armory should always be within 1 lvl of your HQ typically (HQ 14 and above). So back to what I was saying about being picky, At HQ 12 (Armory 10) You will want to focus on all gunboat abilities as being priority. Secondly, and this is a hard one, you will want to pick a primary efficient troop for attacking pvp and npc bases. There are 2 good troops/combinations for this: Warrior's (Rush) and Tanks (Tmed). Now I do understand you don't get medics until HQ 15 so if you choose the Tank path you may end up using Heavy/Zooka for a while longer... Now why only Warrior or Tmed? They are both incredibly efficient at taking out NPC and PVP bases. You will loose vastly less of these troops versus using Hooka or RZM or any other attacking combo. This game rewards the efficient player, if you choose not to use either Warriors or TMed you will go through the Boom Beach journey always having no gold and it will also make doing big upgrades very hard as you will forever be waiting on lost troops to rebuild and end up breaking your phone or tablet out of utter frustration. Lets go through the pro's and cons. Tank/Medic (Tmed): Highly efficient, once perfected you can take out every NPC base in the game without ever loosing a single troop. Boosted tanks are nearly unkillable against PVP bases as well and you can roll over 5-10 player bases sometimes without ever loosing a troop on those big upgrade days. Warriors: While not quite as efficient as Tmed, they rebuild very fast and even if you loose few warriors on an attack you will still be able to take out almost any base being down a few. Warriors are typically much better at taking out resource bases versus Tmed, as well they are more efficient at doing Dr. T and can do stages 6 and 7 far earlier than Tmed can. The choice between Warriors and Tmeds comes down to personal preference, while I really like both, I went down the Tmed path. Eventually (hopefully in the near future)I will level up Warriors as well as they are a really powerful troop in operation attacks later in the game. Next! You should always keep Heavy and Zooka's leveled up, they are easily the best combo for operation attacks and are a must have, especially Zooka's! Once you have leveled your gunboat abilities, Heavy's, Zooka's, and either: Tanks/Medics, or Warriors, you can upgrade other things at your leisure while you wait on your lvl advancement to do an HQ/Armory building upgrade.
Victory Point Management
Managing victory points really isn't that hard. It comes down to making good choices. Refreshing bad bases is the first step. From lvl 40 and up any base with less than 100 K(thousand) of every resource should be refreshed, I personally am even more picky and usually refresh any base with less than 150 K of every resource. Good bases are easy to come by, usually after 2 or 3 refreshes I usually find something good. Just because a base is super easy or even beached doesn't mean you should attack it. Easy bases or beached bases typically have absolutely terrible resources. I have seen people share attacks of beached bases and say thank-you, meanwhile the guy whose base you just raided is probably also saying thank-you. Pick good bases to raid and you will enjoy your Boom Beach journey much more. Next what should your VP score be? I like using the simple formula of lvl X 10. If you are a lvl 40 it should be about 400, 50 should be 500, 55 should be 550, etc. Higher than that and you will get attacked more frequently by higher level players, lower and you will turn into a semi Turtle and have difficulty with resources and intel.
As always if you have any questions about any of this or anything else feel free to PM me.
Cheers!
