The Introduction and the Basics
I've wanted to make this thread for a while as I see a lot of people in the task force who have a number of under leveled and important buildings such as HQ, Armory, Landing Crafts, Vault, Sculptor, and Radar. This strategy is used by all top players and is constantly recommended on the Supercell and Reddit forums. I know this works as I have managed to get my HQ 20 immediately after turning 47, by 48 I had done Radar 20, Vault 20, Gunboat 20, Sculptor 8, and Weapon Lab 5.
First off everyone needs to realize that you can't "save" resources as an offensive player. If you try to save up for those big upgrades you will get raided and always be short of having the necessary resources. Too many players rely on the vault to save resources and you need to get away from that mindset. The map needs to be your vault! You need to save good player bases with lots of resources on your map. I usually refer to these types of players as whales, these are the guys not playing proper strategy and are trying to save for those big upgrades. I truly appreciate them saving their resources, for me!
VP management is going to be a big part of doing big upgrades as well, you don't want to just hit a whole bunch of easy bases, you need to be very selective on the bases you take down. I usually refresh any base that doesn't have at minimum 150K of every resource. I also like to keep a few players on my map that have a lot of gold say in excess of 400K. That way whenever an armory upgrade finishes I have access to several million in gold ready to harvest. I can't stress this enough, just because you can take a player base down, doesn't mean you should, especially beached bases, they usually have terrible resources because everyone else is hitting them. Also watch for turtles IE: guys with tons of greenies and ice statues. These players usually have extremely hard defenses and you will need to take out a lot of bases all at once, and these guys can sometimes really ruin your plans. Make sure the bases you are saving are within your ability to take down. If they are going to be too challenging refresh the base and find another. Good bases are easy to come by.
Submarine: It's good to upgrade your sub up and keep a couple really good dive locations handy, ones that have really high resources. A couple days before doing a big upgrade send that sub out and get that loot! Any loot sitting in your sub is safe and can't be raided.
Armory Upgrading: I usually try and time big building upgrades with big armory upgrades. I will try and time my last armory upgrade so that it finishes around the time that Dr. T spawns on the day that I am going to do a big upgrade. Always try and kill two birds with one stone!
Statues: It is an absolute must to have a good Resource Reward masterpiece and I would even recommend a good guardian RR as well. If you have any green statues get rid of them and get resource reward statues. You will start getting 20X the amount of resources vs. the greenies. Trust me, you will thank me later. You should have good Gunboat Energy, Troop Damage, and Troop Health MP's as well, these are must have statues for everyone even turtles. A good Power Stone Chance is also good to have, the more crystals you can get, the more powder you have, this helps you boost more often for the big paydays.
Edit: Order of importance when upgrading:
1.) HQ - As soon as possible upgrade your HQ, this isn't Clash, there are no drawbacks and only benefits to rushing your HQ.
2.) Sculptor - Statues are such an important part of the game, every statue added will add immensely to your strength, this should be a top priority.
3.) Vault - Having a higher lvl vault helps to keep those resources safe so that you can chain one upgrade after another. Why let others have the resources you worked for?
4.) Armory - Keeping your primary armory upgrades maxed for your lvl is incredibly important, falling behind on upgrades will make game progress very slow, and you will certainly hit the VP wall.
5.) Gunboat - All attacks revolve around GBE (Gunboat Energy) and having as much of it as you can get is going to be beneficial.
6.) Landing Craft - Carrying more troops into battle will always give you a higher chance of success. While this is an incredibly tedious process, it needs to get done!
7.) Storage's - You need to keep up with these buildings or you won't have the capacity to upgrade top tier buildings. Using diamonds because you don't have enough storage capacity is incredibly costly.
8.) Radar - Expanding your radar will allow for more NPC's and PVP's to populate on your map which equates to more resources, more intel, more everything!
Offence should always be your primary focus but if you are caught up and just waiting on experience to get that next HQ lvl focus first on the primary defenses.
1.) Rocket Launchers
2.) Boom Cannons
3.) Shock Launchers
These three defenses are going to net you most of your defensive kills. After these defenses are upgraded the importance of other defenses really depends upon your layout and your lvl. If you need more info please leave a comment to this thread.
Getting the Loot!
So now you have saved a bunch of good bases on your map it's time to get to the fun part. You want to wait for Volcano Island Terror day, why? Because the big upgrades usually take 1-2 days + and most people do big upgrades on Terror days and are looking for bases to hit. If you start a big upgrade on an Tropical Island Terror day, the upgrade will go right thru the next day and you will be ripe for raiding the following day. Not as many people do big upgrades or are attacking as often on Hammerman or Gearheart days so your resources will be somewhat safer so that you can do another big upgrade when the last one finishes. So lets get to it, first boost ALL offensive statues (all red and purple) Including RR statues and PSC if you have one. I usually like to start this about 1 hour before Dr. T spawns, that gives me time to get thru all the bases I need to, and rebuild any troops that I might loose. Take down as many bases as you can until Dr. T spawns then take out Dr. T as far as you can. At this point evaluate what you still need for loot and Harvest sub resources and grab your op rewards, daily rewards, and supply chest loot (Make sure to pick the resource options that you need most). At this point re-evaluate your loot and see what you still need. If you are still short, target player bases with the resources you still require. You have three hours (while boost is active) to get all this done which should be plenty of time. Make sure that if you are rebuilding troops during this time that you don't log out, this is important, if you log out, everything that you just got will probably get raided. Once you get the resources you need, get that upgrade!
Note: if you can time it really well and have gotten your upgrades done and still have your boost going, this is a great time to hit an active task force operation and put all that boost to good use, and kill three birds with one stone!
Good luck, if you have any questions about any of this, feel free to PM me or ask in game.
Cheers.
Edit 02-07-2017: With the addition of the imitation game event, big upgrades became a whole lot easier! While this guide was created prior to the event most of these concepts still work very well however big upgrades should certainly now be started on imitation days. As always if you have any questions please feel free to PM me or message me in the game. Cheers!
